2018 HARVEST – A WINEGROWER’S VINTAGE
Winter marked by several snowfalls. Significant rainfall until the end of May with cool weather and more snow on April 15. Bud break of the vine in early May and flowering in mid-June. The weather was both cold and wet and freed the vineyard from attacks of powdery mildew and downy mildew. The good weather during flowering and good fruit set gave a large load and large bunches. The summer was marked by several storms, a heat wave in early August and good night/day temperature contrasts in September, with still 32 degrees on the 23rd. These favorable conditions continued for the harvest, from October 8 to 20. Intense viticultural work during the summer to control possible attacks of diseases brought by storms and the vigor of the vineyard characteristic of the vintage. Some plots were visited up to five times to carry out green harvests, and this until the day before the final harvest.
TERROIR
The soil of El Sacramento is composed of sandy-silty clay on the surface and silty clay at depth. It has abundant organic and calcareous matter. From a mineral point of view, its composition is perfectly balanced.
The current vineyard was planted in vase with Tempranillo vines in 1986.
La Rioja has a climate that is favourable to the production of fine wines and a variety of terroirs that give them complexity. El Sacramento, due to its ideal location, offers the balance necessary to produce a great wine, to which meticulous work is dedicated.
SITUATION
Situated on a promontory, with an exceptional view of the surroundings, this great wine-growing region, by its location, on the edge of a geological rupture, and by its soil, makes the magic of the terroir happen and this wine is the unique expression of it.
This vineyard of Rioja Alavesa enjoys the DOca RIOJA designation of origin for Denomination of Origen Calificada. This part of Rioja belongs to the province of Alava – Araba, one of the seven provinces of the Basque Country.
Viñas Leizaola acquired the El Sacramento property in March 2011. Leizaola, originally from Gipuzkoa in the north of the Basque Country, is the surname of the mother of the current owner: Etienne Cordonnier, who with this project aims to return to his family roots and offer a wine that reflects the professional training of the Cordonnier family, who have worked for three generations as agents in the Belgian market for many world-class wines.
